Eastern States Penitentiary, Philadelphia, PA : While on the trip to Philadelphia, we had the opportunity to tour the Eastern States Penitentiary. It is located in a populated neighborhood near the Philly Art Museum. The prison opened up in 1829 under the direction of the Quakers. They strongly believed in spirituality and that the prisoners should be isolated to think about their crimes. Inside the cells, the prisoners had a bed, a table, a bible and a toilet. At the top of each cell was the "Eye of God", a small slit that allowed some light into the cell. Prisoners were not allowed to speak with anyone other than a guard or minister. While being moved throughout the prison, prisoners were hooded to maintain the isolation and humility.
The prison was built with a center area called the "rotunda" and cellblocks were built off of that. Infractions of the rules were not tolerated and prisoners would suffer the consequences by breaking the rules. Straight jackets, ice baths, rats or the Mad Chair were used. The Mad Chair looked similar to a barbers chair and the prisoners were strapped to the chair, unable to move at all. Conditions at the prison were considered inhumane and were even commented on by the writer Charles Dickens. Over time, conditions at Eastern States became better and prisoners were allowed to speak with one another and began to work jobs within the prison walls. One of the most famous prisoners to spend time at Eastern States was Al Capone. He was sentenced to a year there for a firearms charge. He had it much better than other prisoners and was almost treated like a star.
The main reason for my wanting to tour there was due to its appearance on my favorite television show, "Ghost Hunters". Eastern States is believed to be one of the most haunted prisons in the country. I never encountered any ghosts but enjoyed it immensely. Because Ghost Hunters shoots in the dark, I had no idea what condition the inside of the prison was and surely had no idea that it was so photogenic. I could have shot there all day and plan to if I ever get back to Philly again.

Haz-Mat Training- Tanner Industries, Philadelphia, PA-4/20-4/24 2009 : Myself and four other Cranston firefighters attended an Ammonia training class at Tanner Industries in Philadelphia, PA. After 2 days of classroom work, attendees work to mitigate a live Ammonia release. The technique they taught was called "tarp and cover". Everyone in attendance learned a great deal about the chemical and I would recommend taking the class if given the opportunity. In attendance were firefighters from Philly's Haz-Mat company, East Providence, Alabama, Montgomery County, Pa, Bethlehem, PA and others that work with Ammonia in private industry.

Philadelphia's Haz-Mat company is comprised of the firefighters of Engine 60 and Ladder 19. They respond to calls as other fire companies in their own response area. If a Hazardous Materials call comes in, they leave the ladder behind and take the large rescue type rig and their specially designed Haz-Mat unit. I have never seen anything like the Haz-Mat rig. It has it's own pressurized lab area, weather station, analyzation machines, video capabilities and more monitoring devices than I thought possible. It is run by a great group of very knowledgeable firefighers.

The weather was great and there were plenty of fires, they were all just on the other side of the city from where we were. We went to a bunch of fires, I just never saw the heavy fire that I am used to seeing in Detroit. We did see heavy fire out the windows of one house we went to but as we were parking the car, the fire went out. We went to several fires that I never took pictures at or even never got out of the car. This gallery contains all of the photos I took from this trip. They are from Detroit and Highland Park.

Boston- Hanover Street-4/18/08 : While on a day trip with family and friends, we were walking from Fanueil Hall to Mike's Pastry in the North End. As we turned on hanover Street, I saw Engine 8 and Ladder 1 in front of a restaurant. It looked like Ladder 1's jacks were starting to extend and then I noticed the members of Engine 8 running out to the rig to get a line. Not having a radio with me or expecting to go to any fires, I didn't have my camera with me, it was in the car. Thankfully our friends had a camera with them that I quickly borrowed and took off. I could smell smoke but never saw any. They had at least two lines stretched and three aerials to the roof. It was funny to see that some people just went about their business, walking down the sidewalk as the firefighters are trying to stretch lines into the building. The restaurant that the fire was in was evacuated but the surrounding ones weren't affected and people just kept eating. Thanks to the Marcellos' for the use of their camera.

Cranston- Air Supply/Rehab : The Cranston Fire Department recently received an Air Supply/ Rehab vehicle. Until now, the department was not capable of filling bottles on the scene of an emergency. This rig provides capability of filling approximately 120 cylinders from a cascade system of 6 tanks. It also provides an area for approximately 10 firefighters to rest and rehydrate, out of the elements, in either a heated or air condition crew cab. The horizontal compartment on the officers side provides an area to warm turnout gear during winter operations. Members of the Cranston Fire Department Local 1363 worked with Hackney in developing this apparatus. To our knowledge, this is the only apparatus of its kind that combines the air supply and rehab area in one vehicle.

Flint, MI- W/F Unknown Street- 10/14/07 : While on our trip to Detroit, we were told about Flint, Michigan and decided to head up Saturday afternoon. It is much smaller than Detroit but very similar. The city is filled with vacant dwellings, as many of its residents have left because of cutbacks in the auto industry. Similar to Detroit, Flint has an arson problem. They have fires nearly every day, and Devils Night still keeps Flint firefighters very busy.

We were talking with the firefighters at Headquarters when units were sent out for a structure fire. Squad 2 reported smoke showing and the first engine stretched in. They had a small fire in the rear of a vacant dwelling. The fire was quickly knocked down.

I would just like to thank the Flint firefighters at both the Headquarters station and Station 3 for their hospitality. It was great getting to meet them and I hope they all stay safe.

Boston- Sheraton Boston-10/5/07 : On the evening of October 5, 2007, just as Dice K was taking the mound for game two of the playoffs, Boston dispatched Engine 22 and Tower Ladder 17 to the Sheraton Boston for the Central Station Alarm. As Ladder 17 was investigating, they found a smoke condition on floor 3 and asked Fire Alarm to Strike the Box. Box 1568 was struck as crews searched for the source of the fire. Companies traced the fire down to the kitchen on the second floor of the hotel. All companies went to work pulling ceilings and checking for fire. Evac Chief 5 ordered companies to clear the fire floor and the area above the kitchen on the third floor. The fire was brought under control within 30 minutes.

I got into this box pretty quickly and found a decent parking spot. As I was walking up to the scene, an extremely large explosion rocked the area, about 1 block from the Sheraton. To me it sounded like one of those large metal plates that utility companies use fell the 10th floor of a building. People began running from the area and police officers that were at the Sheraton began running down towards the source of the explosion. A box was struck for the explosion and crews found an electrical vault was the cause. Management inside the Hilton Hotel, adjacent to the electrical vault, reported that the entire building shook and the lights went out for a second and then came back on.
