I happened to be in town shooting photos for a project when this fire came in. Station 1 apparatus pulled out of quarters in front of me and I got stuck at a few lights. Had I not taken that one shot of the fire out the windows, I would not have seen any fire. NP firefighters made very quick work of this fire.

Brooklyn- South 4th and Roebling-Amanda's Shots : As Amanda and I were driving down the BQE, enroute to Grimaldi's for a pizza, Brooklyn dispatched companies to South 4th Street just as we were passing underneath the South 4th overpass. We got off at the next exit and back tracked to the fire. We parked on South 4th about a quarter mile away and ran/walked to the fire. We arrived within 7 minutes of the dispatch, which is a record for us. There was no visible fire but still a good job to make. I forgot my long lens in the car and missed some great shots. Luckily, Amanda was able to capture all of those shots I missed. I still get a kick out of the looks Amanda gets while taking photos at a fire. She has her own camera and isn't shy about shooting. While I won't take a face shot while the person is looking at me, Amanda has no problem standing next to someone and pointing the camera and taking a shot. Where I would get dirty looks for doing so, most people smile for Amanda.

Haz-Mat Training- Tanner Industries, Philadelphia, PA-4/20-4/24 2009 : Myself and four other Cranston firefighters attended an Ammonia training class at Tanner Industries in Philadelphia, PA. After 2 days of classroom work, attendees work to mitigate a live Ammonia release. The technique they taught was called "tarp and cover". Everyone in attendance learned a great deal about the chemical and I would recommend taking the class if given the opportunity. In attendance were firefighters from Philly's Haz-Mat company, East Providence, Alabama, Montgomery County, Pa, Bethlehem, PA and others that work with Ammonia in private industry.

Philadelphia's Haz-Mat company is comprised of the firefighters of Engine 60 and Ladder 19. They respond to calls as other fire companies in their own response area. If a Hazardous Materials call comes in, they leave the ladder behind and take the large rescue type rig and their specially designed Haz-Mat unit. I have never seen anything like the Haz-Mat rig. It has it's own pressurized lab area, weather station, analyzation machines, video capabilities and more monitoring devices than I thought possible. It is run by a great group of very knowledgeable firefighers.
