Eastern States Penitentiary, Philadelphia, PA : While on the trip to Philadelphia, we had the opportunity to tour the Eastern States Penitentiary. It is located in a populated neighborhood near the Philly Art Museum. The prison opened up in 1829 under the direction of the Quakers. They strongly believed in spirituality and that the prisoners should be isolated to think about their crimes. Inside the cells, the prisoners had a bed, a table, a bible and a toilet. At the top of each cell was the "Eye of God", a small slit that allowed some light into the cell. Prisoners were not allowed to speak with anyone other than a guard or minister. While being moved throughout the prison, prisoners were hooded to maintain the isolation and humility.
The prison was built with a center area called the "rotunda" and cellblocks were built off of that. Infractions of the rules were not tolerated and prisoners would suffer the consequences by breaking the rules. Straight jackets, ice baths, rats or the Mad Chair were used. The Mad Chair looked similar to a barbers chair and the prisoners were strapped to the chair, unable to move at all. Conditions at the prison were considered inhumane and were even commented on by the writer Charles Dickens. Over time, conditions at Eastern States became better and prisoners were allowed to speak with one another and began to work jobs within the prison walls. One of the most famous prisoners to spend time at Eastern States was Al Capone. He was sentenced to a year there for a firearms charge. He had it much better than other prisoners and was almost treated like a star.
The main reason for my wanting to tour there was due to its appearance on my favorite television show, "Ghost Hunters". Eastern States is believed to be one of the most haunted prisons in the country. I never encountered any ghosts but enjoyed it immensely. Because Ghost Hunters shoots in the dark, I had no idea what condition the inside of the prison was and surely had no idea that it was so photogenic. I could have shot there all day and plan to if I ever get back to Philly again.
